the piano has been drinking.

yesterday, i was playing iggy pop at work. my colleague|friend raised that he much preferred pop over tom waits. today, he continued with the thought, dissecting his position. i do not, however, concur. i am a tom waits person. my penchant for the singer/songwriter can be traced back to my childhood, when we were raised on a healthy diet of waits, dylan, pink floyd, lou reed, etc.

our conversation started a couple of weeks ago, in a cocktail bar. it was early evening, the bar was empty. i was drinking a 1940s cocktail. and tom wait's gravelly voice sauntered in the background. he eventually came to tell us that his piano had been drinking. [it was this song that always made me giggle when i was little.] what more could you want? not tom waits, according to my friend.

but what i particularly love about waits is his face + quirkiness. and no one has captured his nuances like london-based, dutch photographer anton corbijn [my favourite portrait photographer]. corbijn first came to my attention with his photography of u2; in particular, i got excited about his stuff for achtung baby, in the early 90s. oh. hang on. i'm talking about tom waits here. and who didn't love him in 'the imaginarium of dr parnassus'?
