this afternoon i treated myself to a little zeigeist listening pleasure. i do rather enjoy electro-pop, afterall. you might also recognise karin dreijer andersson's vocals in the knife and, most recently, fever ray [her solo work].
so, after i got hooked on her voice, i decided to listen to the knife - a super sexy swedish electro-pop duo. i have an intimate relationship with deep cuts, so i skipped it and went straight to silent shouts. then i discovered a the knife album i didn't realise i owned. [this is what happens when you collect too much music from others.]
wow. what a delicious, experimental surprise [especially given i had thought it was friday until about 3pm.] lovely cover art, too.
tomorrow, in a year is the soundtrack to an electro-opera - an unconventional score created by the knife, in collaboration with berlin dance-rock act mt. sims + chamber experimentalist planningtorock. created by danish experimental performance group hotel pro forma, the opera celebrates the 150th anniversary of the publication of darwin's the origin of species [1859] - a book that changed our view of the world. it is a large-scale, awe-inspiring, operatic wonder, inspired by darwin's notion of time + nature.
the experimental + exploratory compositions most certainly challenge conventional conceptions of opera. it's mood reflects its origins of recording [the amazon jungle + iceland] and combines sounds from the natural world, with man-made electronic atmospherics, interspersed with swirling vocals. engaging the latest technologies in light + sound, our perceptions of the world as a place of incredible variation, unity and similarity is rediscovered in this revolutionary electronic feast for the senses.
and i love a sensory feast.
[oddly enough, the opera is currently playing at the 2010 melbourne festival.]
