there is some absolutely amazing independent music coming out of brisbane at the moment. one of my favourites is folk-pop group charlie mayfair, whose harmonies are bursting with sexy deliciousness, and will have you singing along... even if you're not sure of the words. in which case, humming is quite permissible.
the first time i heard charlie mayfair, i was driving. it was their first time being played on triple j. i remember wanting to stop the car so i could just listen. the song was 'watch my hands' and hannah's vocals left me utterly mesmerised - you know when you hear a song for the first time and it seeps deep within and leaves you floating for some time after? well. it was one of those moments. shortly after, a friend lent me their ep [of the same name]. that's right, i fell completely in love. so i bought one myself, after seeing them at the finders keepers market in june.
i have seen them live a number of times now, playing alongside other brisbane acts such as montpelier, inland sea and mr maps, and an amazing acoustic set with melbourne-based band skipping girl vinegar. last night was the second show of their 'i fell down' tour and it was a splendid evening of home-grown loveliness. montpelier played 'a rare' acoustic set [two members had absconded elsewhere], feat. will + hannah from charlie mayfair in some songs. i think i almost liked the acoustic to the full band. it was a perfect start to the night. local singer/songwriter dan parsons was also great, with his red guitar. he was looking particularly lyle lovettish, too.
then charlie mayfair opened their set with the gorgeous new clip for 'if i fell down', directed by ruwan de silva. such a delight! the sound wasn't brilliant at the venue, but the show was awesome despite this. the drums at the end of 'blue water' had me dancing and dreaming - possibly my favourite charlie mayfair song. ah. a lovely charlie mayfair music experience.
one day you will wake up, and charlie mayfair will have taken over the airwaves. and won't that be an exciting thing! and here it is... the official clip for 'if i fell down'.
